Aphrodite’s Birthplace

Cyprus is a paradise island in the Mediterranean sea. The sun is bright, the water is turquoise, and the cliffs are as as white as the wings of an angel. From Paphos on the west, with its glorious architecture and mythology treasures, to the majestic Troodos mountain decorated with Byzantine churches and precious handicrafts, to enchanting Agia Napa on the east coast, where you may enjoy a glass of red wine with a plate of grilled goat cheese, Halloumi, while gazing out over the deep water, this island has something to offer every travel connoisseur – and I would know, because I worked as a tour guide there!

This picturesque island was my home for almost a year. I was only 21 when I left Sweden. I had just gone through a break-up and was absolutely heartbroken, and I knew it was now or never. It was as if I was called to do something radical – my entire soul was yearning for a big change.  I was ready for the world!

I can’t remember if it was the same day we broke up or a few days later, but it was not long before I walked into the headquarters of one of the largest Scandinavian tour operators.

I was hired pretty much on the spot, and a couple weeks later I found myself on a plane heading for Cyprus. I was given a small apartment in Agia Napa, a very pretty location, but it was rather noisy – since it at the time was primarily tailored to young travelers. My days were vibrant and full of activities from morning to night. A couple times a week I would go to the airport and meet new Scandinavian tourists, and take them to their hotels, and the rest of my time was filled up with hotel management, holding water and aerobic sessions, and performing in cabarets – the European kind -family friendly musicals!

Soon enough I felt called to do more. It’s not that I don’t love young travelers and fabulous parties – I do, but I’ve never been much of a party girl. After a few nights out of the town, eventually I just want to stay home with a good book, or enjoy my own company for a while.

Already in my early 20s I knew it: I don’t like being out partying weeks on end, and I am definitely not tailored to cater to party-goers everyday. My life began to feel empty, and I felt out of place.  I knew I wanted to learn more, explore more, live more.

As luck would have it, a position opened up for a historical tour guide, and this turned out to be the perfect fit for me! Several times a week I got to take travelers on scenic tours around the island.

Every Friday, I would take them to Paphos . This was my favorite trip of the week. Paphos in itself is a magnificent town, and has some unique architecture worth visiting, and some really gorgeous hotels, but that was just some of the allure. What really enthralled me was a small rock out in the ocean just off the coast on the way to Paphos – and no wonder, it was the birthplace of Aphrodite! The Olympian love goddess! According to legends, she arose from the sea, out of sea foam, and there is indeed a considerable amount of white sea foam around the cliff. This cliff is locally known as Petra tou Romiou.

The birthplace of Aphrodite is a place of divine femininity. Ever since my magnificent tours there, I’ve felt inspired by her divine beauty. If I ever feel weak, I think of her goodness and beauty. To me, she represents the divine goddess in all of us, and the feminine power that is always there for us- if we just align our hearts with our higher selves, and live from a place of love.

We all have the power to flow, and become one with goddess eternal.

If you are a woman, it is your birthright to flourish and blossom into the goddess you are!
