Dream Incubation

For quite a few years now I’ve been a member of a beautiful dream organization called the International Association for the Study of Dreams, where I also serve as Manager for our online course offering. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking at a few of the conferences over the years, which has been tremendously rewarding. The annual IASD conference for 2017, will coincidentally be held in Anaheim, California in June!

The international conference back in 2014 was to be held in Berkeley, California, and I knew I really wanted to present a symposium, but when the proposal was due – which was about six months prior to the actual conference, I had no idea what my topic would be!

Time was of essence, as I only had a few days to submit my proposal. I decided to do what a dreamer does – to incubate on an answer – that is, ask my dreams for help!

A dream incubation doesn’t always work. Sometimes you just need to be persistent and keep doing it for weeks.

When I went to bed that night I prayed with all my heart that a dream would show up and help guide me in the right direction. I turned off the light and slowly drifted into a deep sleep.

As I woke up in the morning, I reached out for my dream journal before I even dared opening up my eyes. I was so scared of loosing my dream. It was a big dream – and would you know it, of all the people in the world – a person who had influenced me greatly as I was preparing for another IASD conference some years back showed up in the dream!

I grabbed a pen and started jotting down my dream quickly:

I’m visiting my friend’s home. I have not seen him in a long time, and notice how his face is now a clock. There is nothing extraordinary or strange about it, I just feel so much love towards the clock.

In that moment, I knew instantly that my symposium would have something to do with time, but I still couldn’t figure out what aspect? Maybe the incubation was not finished.

The next night, I decided to continue my incubation and ask for my clarity. It turned out to be a lucky move. In the middle of the night, I woke up from yet another incredible dream:

I’m with my daughter at a small 7/11 convenience store, and E.T., the extra terrestrial character from the 80s movie, walks in just after we walkout. I think to myself how cool it would be if we could go back in time just a few seconds, so that we can be in the store as E.T. walks in, and say hello to him! So we do. We actually travel back in time, and sure enough, now we are still in the store when he walks in, and we are able to greet him.

This is an example of an amazing dream incubation gone right!

From my two dreams, it became clear that my research would not only involve time,  but how it would also circle around inter-dimensional time, as E.T. after all is from another dimension – in other words, my symposium would be on time travel in dreams!

Preparing for this seminar was one of the most profound moments in my life. The project had a loving conception, it was born inside my dreams, outside of time, and grew inside my heart!
