In my mid 20s I lived in London in a small cute apartment in the middle of London, in picturesque Knightsbridge. My closest grocery store was the food court at Harrods! It was such a precious time of my life. On Sunday mornings I would go to cute cafes, and enjoy the paper.
One of those mornings at a charming cafe I was sitting next to a man, and as it turned out we were both reading the same article. We soon began dating, and what followed what a whirlwind romance.
He was an charming poet, who broke my heart in many ways – but mostly because I let him.
He did give my one beautiful gift however, and that was the love for poetry.
It was during this time of my life that I found W.B. Yeats, and probably because of my broken heart, I was often drawn to this poem Never give all the heart.
Never give all the heart, for love
Will hardly seem worth thinking of
To passionate women if it seem
Certain, and they never dream
That it fades out from kiss to kiss;
For everything that’s lovely is
But a brief, dreamy, kind delight.
O never give the heart outright,
For they, for all smooth lips can say,
Have given their hearts up to the play.
And who could play it well enough
If deaf and dumb and blind with love?
He that made this knows all the cost,
For he gave all his heart and lost.
Now, many years later, I don’t really feel as drawn to the words anymore, as I used to, but it’s still a very fond memory in my heart.
Today, I believe in giving all my heart, in everything I do! But what I have found is important is to do it with integrity, and most of all to be honest with ourselves. Even though I was hurt by some of his actions, I kept on giving him all my love – and I was no longer living in truth. All I wanted was to feel loved.
That feeling is found within us. When we feel loved by ourselves, we have compassion for the world, and others – and can give all our heart without loosing ourselves.
