Early bird gets the worm

I love my mornings! I may not always be up at 5AM, but I honor my sleep and I am dedicated to my early morning routine.

When my daughter was younger we would often rush to school with only minutes to spare,  which needless to say was very stressful. It was not a healthy way to start the day, and I didn’t feel like a good mother. I knew the only way to get a calmer and more serene morning routine was to get up earlier.

Best of all, when I started getting up earlier my bedtime automatically changed, so I didn’t have to force myself to bed earlier. In fact, as it turned out, rising before the sun also helped me fall asleep easier in the night. By the time evenings came around I was often so exhausted I would be entering dreamland shortly after resting my head on the pillow.

It was the best thing I ever did for my family. I am so much happier now in the mornings, and there is a new sense of energy and joy all around the house. When I get up, I feel dedicated and ready to start the day, and I have bonus time to write!

I’ve noticed the same changes in my daughter as well. She is so exuberant and full of energy, and sometimes she’s even ready to head out the door before I’ve finished brushing my teeth!

We leave extra early for school as well, and this turned out to be another genius move – there is hardly any traffic on the roads! As we cruise down the streets, we often laugh and say to each other: “Early bird gets the worm!”

By the time I have dropped off my daughter I’ve already been writing for 30 minutes, and I’m dressed and ready to face the day. Some days I head straight to hot yoga, other days I get an early start on projects and work.

Getting up earlier in the morning is one of the most precious gifts we can give ourselves. Research studies have found people with early morning routines tend to more proactive, stable, conscientious and agreeable – all fabulous benefits I think!
