How to remember your dreams

When I tell people I specialize in dream analysis, there is always someone who tells me they can’t remember their dreams, or that they don’t think they dream at all.

Rest assured though – even if you don’t remember your dreams, you are dreaming! We all dream.

On average we have about 3 to 5 dreams every night, and we dream about two hours. So that’s quite a lot of dreaming! If we have a lifespan of 75 years, which is very possible today, that means we spend over 6 years of our lives dreaming!

The more interest we show in our dreams, the more we remember them! If you are a person who actively thinks about your dreams for example, and perhaps writes them down in a journal in the morning, there is a natural interest there, and dreams correspond to that! The more attention you give your dreams, the more you will remember your nightly dream adventures!

A person who doesn’t pay much attention to their dreams on the other hand, will probably not make the effort to write their dreams down, or lay in bed reflecting on their dream journeys when they wake up- so therefore they will be forgotten.

The good news is we can program ourselves to remember our dreams, simply by reminding ourselves when going to be at night that we will remember our dreams when we wake up.

When you focus your attention on remembering your dreams you will! If you are determined to remember more dreams, it is also very helpful having a journal and pen handy next to your bed, so that you don’t need to move around in the morning looking for a place to write down your dream. Because once you begin moving your body, you risk loosing the dream back into the depths of the unconscious – and now you have lost a beautiful opportunity of listening to your inner self, and enhance your awareness – perhaps learning to know yourself on a deeper level, and have more compassion for yourself – being more understanding of why you do what you do, and maybe seeing a life situation from a broader perspective.

I believe in enhancing our awareness whenever we can, and honoring our dreams is one of the most beautiful steps we can take along the way.
