Every night before falling asleep I say a very special little prayer that I learned as a child in Sweden. I’ve been saying it almost every night all my life, wherever I’ve lived – and that has been a lot of places in many different countries over the years.
I say it in Swedish, because that is how I remember it, and that is how it lives in my heart.
A few years back I was attending an aviation conference in Beverly Hills, and I had the pleasure of talking with one of the directors of a major bank during one of the evening receptions. He happily shared with me how his grandmother had been from Sweden, and how he had such fond memories of learning a Swedish prayer from her when he was a little boy – but how he could no longer remember it.
I curiously asked him if it perhaps went something like this…
Gud som haver barnen kär
Se till mig som liten är
Vart jag mig i världen vänder
Står min lycka i Guds händer
Lyckan kommer lyckan går
Du förbliver Fader vår.
Amen.
As I recited my little prayer, his eyes turned into bright stars, and his big smile sent out warm waves of joy all around him. That was indeed the same one. He hadn’t heard this prayer since a young child, and I still remember how happy he was to hear it again!
This soft and sweet little prayer may have been made for children, but I have a pretty good feeling I will keep on saying it for years to come. It has brought me so much comfort, love and protection through the years.
Do you have a goodnight prayer?

Here is the one that our mom used to tell us. It is a Czech prayer for children:
ANDELICKU, MUJ STRAZNICKU, OPATRUJ TU MOU DUSICKU.
OPATRUJ JI VE DNE V NOCI, NENECHEJ JI BEZ POMOCI
AMEN.
It means:
Little angel, my protector, take care for my little soul.
Protect it day and night, do not leave it without help.
