St. Francis Prayer, by St. Francis of Assisi happens to be one of my favorite prayers. I earlier wrote about it in my blog about Grace some months back.
When I was in India, we often sang this song, but instead of using the word peace, we replaced it with Grace.
Gracefully, I’ve held onto this prayer over the years. I still both say it and sing it with love. Many years back now, I used to hold meditation events every Saturday morning on the beach in Laguna, where I also offered a sacred blessing. While walking around among participants, I often recited the St. Francis prayer to myself, as I prayed to be an instrument of Grace.
Sometimes I would ask people to share their experiences at the end of the meditation. One day a lady raised her hand, and said she kept hearing the word Grace! I was so touched and honored. This truly is a miraculous prayer. If you haven’t before heard it, here it is. If you only remember one line, the first one beautifully conveys the message.
Lord, make me an instrument of peace
where there is hatred, let me sow love
where there is injury, pardon
where there is doubt, faith
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light
where there is sadness, joy
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life
St. Francis of Assisi
I wish everyone Grace in their lives, and may the prayer of St. Francis help you spread light and love all around.
