Don’t you just love reading an inspirational book that fills you with insight, love, and understanding, and change the way you look at life forever? Reading good books happens to be one of my favorite pastimes, and one of the books I keep close to my bedside is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
Don Miguel Ruiz has a remarkable way of inviting readers to taste complex spiritual teachings as part of an eloquent smorgasbord, nicely organized in easily understood sections. The four agreements is an excellent example:
The Four Agreements
Be impeccable with your word
Don’t take anything personally
Don’t make assumptions
Always do your best
Implementing the Four Agreements in Your Life
First Agreement: Be impeccable with your word
Don Miguel Ruiz says, “Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or gossip about others”.
These words ring so true to me. Because isn’t it so, that every word we speak indeed has an impact – either in your life, and someone else’s? If we know this, why would we wish to harm ourselves or other people around us? By speaking with integrity and honoring ourselves and others we stay in a higher vibration.
I have an angel in my dream sometimes, that walks by my side and whispers words of wisdom into my ear. She often reminds me to keep the intention of love in my heart. I feel love is the answer to the first agreement.
My words of advice for the first agreement:
With love in your heart, your words will come out right!
Second Agreement: Don’t take anything personally
Don Miguel Ruiz says “What others say or do is a projection of their own reality.”
I feel this is one of the most fundamental teachings in life, yet we keep forgetting it! Wayne Dyer used to say: “What other people think of me is none of my business”, and I love this quote so much. It so perfectly sums up the second agreement.
I think the key to this agreement, is building more trust and belief in ourselves, so that we don’t feel rocked off the boat every time something doesn’t go our way, or someone says something negative about us.
My words of advice for the second agreement:
Believe in yourself!
Third Agreement: Don’t make assumptions
Don Miguel Ruiz says “Find the courage to ask questions and communicate with others clearly.”
Every day we, as humans, make assumptions on based on our own personal interpretation of events – which naturally unfolds from our individual lens of life. By meditating and living a more mindful life, we are able to clear out some of the internal “clutter” which might otherwise interfere with the way we see, feel and experience events.
My words of advice for the third agreement:
Meditate and clear out the internal clutter!
Fourth Agreement: Always do your best
Don Miguel Ruiz says “Simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.”
We constantly judge ourselves for our actions as well as our in-actions. By learning to understand that we may not always react the way we had expected we would, we develop more compassion for ourselves, and also reach a deeper understanding of people around us.
My words of advice for the fourth agreement:
Have compassion for yourself and love yourself for who you are!
I hope these little words of advice have served as useful tools for implementing the four agreements in your life!
