Many years back, as a 17-year old, I spent the summer as an au-pair with a family in London. It was such an invigorating experience – it was my first time out in the world by myself!
The family was gone during the day, and I had the afternoon to myself. I decided to look through the VHS collection, and found the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Birds. I had never seen it, and decided it would be fun to view a classic film!
If you have seen the movie, you know there are no “fun” elements anywhere. It is extremely scary! My mindset was soon enough dialed in on birds, and there was an element of fear all around. I was terrified!
Half way into the movie I suddenly felt a presence in the room. I turned around and there was a bird behind me, looking straight at me. A black bird was inside the living room, just standing there. Still to this day I do not know how he entered the house. All windows were closed. On top of it all, he couldn’t fly.
I approached him holding an enormous pillow in front of me for protection, and he now began jumping around. I chased him up the stairs, and he squatted into one of the bedrooms and I quickly closed the door.
Right at that moment the door bell rang. I ran downstairs, and swung open the front door (this was back in the early 90s, and I was refreshingly naive thinking everyone is nice!). There was a man standing there announcing he’s come to fix the oven. I wasn’t aware of any appliances that needed fixing, but I happily let him in (really!?).
As luck will have it, he was not part of the negative energy that I had built up by watching the movie, but he actually turned out to be there to really repair the oven. He was also very helpful in terms of getting the bird out of the house!
He looked a bit scared himself, so I equipped him with a large curtain rod before sending him into the room with the bird – quickly closing the door behind him. I waited outside with a pounding heart. It took a few minutes, but finally he reappeared saying he got the bird out the window!
Now, isn’t this a peculiar example of how our mindset can direct our experience – literally!!!
